Comfort Stations

What began simply as an effort by Discovery chairman/CEO and single father Michael Meldman to keep his 4- and 6-year old boys occupied on the golf course has matured over time into a DLC institution that brings a new level of enjoyment to every round of golf. "The golf staff at Estancia would literally put coolers filled with ice cream and candy bars every few holes on the course, so that Hunter and Will would stay engaged, and we could enjoy our time together," remembers Meldman.  "As the boys got older, the comfort stations evolved, and we started to include every treat imaginable. Eventually we added full bars for members to enjoy."

A refreshing respite between golf course holes, Discovery Land Company has comfort stations that reflect the local atmosphere at all its properties.  Golf architect Tom Fazio, who has designed 10 DLC courses, may be the only one complaining- with tongue firmly in cheek. He told Abbott that at The Madison Club in La Quinta, California, he was trying to get people to talk about the golf course, but all they wanted to talk about was sushi and the fruit stand.

The comfort stations at Gozzer Ranch have become famous throughout Discovery Land Company. With local décor and flavor, Chef Paul Goll has made the Gozzer Ranch comfort stations a key component of his culinary program. From 4 different jerkies to tuna and chicken salad to dried fruits, almost everything in the Gozzer comfort stations is homemade.  That is just a fraction of what is available each day and some member favorites include the pancetta chips and the root beer float station after hole #5 or the warm mini-sandwiches and "the cheese" at hole #14. Rustic decorative touches include rocking chairs on the porch for kicking back, a wall-mounted root beer keg tap, and antique appliances for chilling bottled water.
